Medford Residents Targeted In Social Security Scam: Police

Police issued a warning after several residents reported being targeted by a new phone scam.

MEDFORD, MA — Police have received reports of Medford residents being targeted by phone scams. Residents are being told their Social Security Number has been suspended due to suspicious activity or because it was involved in a crime, police said.

"The caller will want you to confirm your social security number," police said. "The caller will say that your bank account is about to be seized, but will tell you how to keep it safe. This often involves putting your money on gift cards and giving the caller the codes or asking your credit card."

The Social Security Administration, and the IRS, do not operate this way, according to police. The department also warned of unsolicited emails and advised residents to research charities to make sure they are legitimate before making a donation.
