Medford Sees Drop In Serious Car Crashes

MEDFORD, MA — There were 1,220 motor vehicle crashes in Medford last year, the bulk of which saw no injuries, according to data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Of those crashes, there were 15 with serious injuries, the lowest number since 2011.

Meanwhile overall crashes are on a slight decline. The number of total crashes was Medford's lowest since 2015, though that number has hovered around 1,200 over the last four years. Medford aligns with the statewide trend, which dropped slightly in 2019 and 2018 after increasing over the previous years.

There was one fatal crash in 2019 and 2018. The last year Medford did not record a fatal crash was 2011, and since then the city has seen one or two fatal crashes annually, save for three in 2016.

In 2019, there were 15 serious injury crashes and 130 minor injury crashes in Malden. No injuries were reported in 870 crashes. Of the 1,220 crashes, 182 were classified as "older driver related" and 106 were classified as "young driver related." There were 21 crashes involving pedestrians, 19 involving bicycles and 11 involving motorcycles.

According to intersection data from 2014-2016, the latest period it is available, the three intersections with the most crashes were Veterans Memorial Highway and Revere Beach Parkway, Veterans Memorial Highway and Mystic Valley Parkway and Main Street and Mystic Valley Parkway.
