Buddhism in a Nutshell

It presents basic Buddhist philosophy and principles within the Tibetan Mahayana context, and provides simple meditation instruction. The series is also suitable for those who have done some independent reading on Buddhism and are interested in a more systematic study.

Meditation 101
This course will introduce you to the basics of a Buddhist meditation practice. Among the class topics will be the importance of meditation in daily life, proper meditative posture, creating a meditation practice, and the introduction of several meditations to begin your practice.
Everyday Dharma
Although there are no prerequisites to attend this series, this course builds on what we’ve covered in the Buddhism in a Nutshell and Meditation 101 introductory courses. Unlike other lecture-style courses, this series aims to be more interactive, where participants will have an opportunity to share their opinions and thoughts about each of the real-life situations that will be discussed by the group.
How to Take Refuge
In this class we will cover the process to take Refuge, what it means, and the basic commitments. We will also discuss reasons not to take Refuge but, instead, practice Buddhism within the context of some other religion. For some, taking Refuge will be appropriate; and for others practicing Buddhist philosophy and science (without taking Refuge) will be best. The choice to take Refuge is very personal. This class aims to help introductory series students make the decision whether or not to pursue taking Refuge.
Establishing a Daily Practice
In the Establishing a Daily Practice class, we cover basic practices designed to deepen our mindfulness and awareness. Disciplined execution of these basic practices help to remind us of the many concepts covered throughout the introductory series.
Analytical Meditation Series
This three-session series of guided meditations will cover three key aspects of Buddhist practice. The format involves entering a meditative state of concentration, listening to the class text, and then having a group discussion about the key aspects of the meditation, seeking to derive in-depth meaning and understanding of these topics.
- Refuge in the Three Jewels
- Patience
- Reincarnation
