New Medford Police HQ Completion Date Announced

Mayor Burke on Tuesday outlined the construction schedule for the 35,000-square-foot building.

MEDFORD, MA – Construction is set to begin later this year on the new Medford police headquarters, Mayor Stephanie M. Burke announced Tuesday. Burke outlined a schedule for the 35,000-square-foot project, which will house the police department's administration, records, patrol, training, detectives, detention, community services and 911 communications when finished.

The project is expected to be completed by April 28, 2020 and fully operational by June 8 of that year.

The city established a working group comprised of Chief Leo Sacco, Burke's Chief of Staff Jennifer Dever Wood, Director of Energy and Environment Alicia Hunt, City Engineer Cassandra Koutalidis, President of Daedalus Projects, Inc. Richard Marks, Jeff Shaw, Zel Toncic, Ken Propp and Elizabeth Apeldoorn of Context Architecture. The group meets weekly to discuss the ongoing details, timeline and plans for the new station.

Members of the Medford Police Department and the Medford Patrolman's Union and the Superior Officers Union have been involved in tours of the city's stations as well as discussions about plans and further development, the mayor's office said.

"We’re moving forward in a positive direction with the guidance of the working group and I am pleased with the progress thus far," Mayor Stephanie M. Burke said in a statement. "Our police officers will soon have a safe, modern building that will fit their needs for decades to come."

The headquarters will be built two feet above ground level and is on track to be low-energy and fossil fuel-free, officials said. It is designed to withstand future climate changes and includes a lobby with access to community services and private consultation space, with full integrated technology and building security systems.

The city's construction schedule is below:

Demolition and Pre-loading Phase

  • Early Demolition Package Bid opening – March 15th
  • Early Site Prep Package Pre-loading Bids Received and Awarded – March 22nd
  • Demolition Contract Finalized – March 28th
  • Design Development Drawings Due – March 30th
  • Pre-loading Contract Finalized – April 10th
  • Demolition Contractor Completed – May 30th
  • Pre-loading Contractor Begins Work – May 31st
  • Pre-loading Complete – July 15th

Design Activities

  • Design Development Phase Completed – March 30th
  • Construction Documents Phase Begins – April 2nd and complete July 6th
  • Quality Control Review Begins – July 9th
  • Construction Project Goes Out to Bid – August 7th with bid opening mid-September

Construction Activities

  • Construction Contract Signed – October 2nd
  • Pre-Construction Work Starts – October 3rd
  • Pre-loading Waiting Period Over – December 31st

2019

  • Main Construction Begins – January 1st

2020

  • Construction Complete – April 28th
  • Move in Furniture and Equipment – April 29th
  • New Building Open and Operational – June 8th
