Teens From Malden, Somerville, Facing Charges In Stolen Car Chase

The incident began in Medford and ended in Malden.

MEDFORD, MA — More details have been revealed about the juveniles involved in the reported car chase that took place Monday morning and the official charges they are facing.

Medford, Malden, and State Police responded to the scene on Barbara Lane at approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday morning after receiving a report of a motor vehicle break-in in progress. Authorities pursued the vehicle as it crossed into neighboring Malden, where it eventually collided with a State Police cruiser. One officer involved fired his weapon, but no one was struck. According to Medford police, that officer has since been placed on leave.

Upon impact, five juveniles exited the car and attempted to flee on foot. They were soon apprehended on James Street and Medford Street, respectively. Along with the three officers, one of the juveniles was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Medford police said that they have all since been released.

One of the five juveniles involved is a 17-year-old from Malden who has been charged with assault to murder, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, marked lanes violation, speeding, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of property damage. Two 16-year-olds from Somerville and a 14-year-old from Malden have each been charged with receiving a motor vehicle. Another 16-year-old from Malden is facing the same charge along with an outstanding warrant.

The group is slated to be arraigned in Cambridge Juvenile Court.
