Verizon Proposing 44 5G Sites In Medford
The short-range mobile cell sites, known as "small cells," would be installed on existing utility poles in Medford.
MEDFORD, MA — Verizon Wireless wants to install short-range mobile 5G sites, known as "small cells," on 44 utility poles in Medford. The cells work in conjunction with larger cell towers to expand coverage in high-traffic areas, Verizon said.
Coverage can range from a few hundred feet to upwards of 1,000 feet, allowing more customers to use the network, according to the company. Verizon is in the process of obtaining permits from the city and plans to install the cells over the next three months if permits are approved.

The city will hold a public meeting Wednesday, Jan. 15 to discuss the location applications. The meeting will take place in the City Council Chambers at Medford City Hall from 6-7:30 p.m.
