Why is the Medford Police Department Ticketing Parked Cars in the Public Housing Projects?
I am wondering what purpose it is serving for the police to ticket cars in the public housing projects.
I think everyone in Medford, MA should know that the Medford Police Department is going to the Public Housing Projects off Riverside Avenue and putting tickets on cars which are parked in their assigned spots. Why are they doing this? Are the registrations expired? Surely, it must be something important if they are ticketed. My question is: Would the Medford Police be doing this to a car parked on, for example, Fulton Street -- someone parked in front of their house but on a public road? I highly doubt it. I think they are targeting low-income Medford residents by ticketing these cars. The tickets are given an almost-daily basis.
Is this what constitutes protecting and serving our citizens? Is this because it is low-income housing? If so, then I ask: Why are they doing this? Are these people dangerous people and/or people who have committed violent or other crimes? Did the police see them commit a crime? It can't be that because the cars are parked when they're ticketed. The people are parking in their own parking spots assigned by the Medford Housing Authority. I called the police station about this situation, and asked them why they are ticketing these cars. They would not say why, but they said that it has nothing to do with the fact that the tickets are given to public housing residents. I disagree; I think that it's the major reason. Would police ticket cars in a middle-class neighborhood? What about a higher-income neighborhood? Is a class issue?
In these divisive times, doing this only marginalizes people in the community. Treating the lower-class citizens differently because of where they live does not bring the community together. It does not help people who live in public housing feel better about the police. It is not protecting the community from criminal activity. It places a financial burden on the people whose cars are ticketed -- I assume that if they live in public housing, they don't have a ton of money. I would like to know what other Medford residents think of this. Is this what we pay our taxes for? Is this how the Medford Police Department should be spending their time? Please let me know your opinion. Thanks.
