A $400,000 bond approved by the Melrose Board of Aldermen on Monday allows for the construction of up to 23 new parking spots in the city’s downtown area.

The bond will allow the city to purchase and destroy the former Law Offices of Killam & Cinella located at 1 Kimball Court.

When the construction is complete, additional parking spaces will then be created in the Dill’s Court parking lot behind the Shaw’s on Essex Street.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $675,000. In order to build 23 spots, the city’s zoning board would have to approve the use of smaller spaces. Otherwise 21 spaces will be built.

Only one board member voted against approving the bond due to the cost of the project. The others believe creating additional parking spots in the area will go a long way toward creating business growth.
