Summer Hoop Title for Rising Frosh*

The Melrose girls' basketball youth movement is on the rise. In the championship game of the South Division, Melrose, the youngest team in the league, took home the championship with a 31-24 (14 minute halves) victory thanks to stout defense and aggressive rebounding at both ends. The team had a season high thirty-seven rebounds. The girls led 27-22 with 4:01 remaining, and came up with numerous key stops down the stretch to seal the win.

Ten girls played in the Eastern Basketball League summer program, gaining valuable experience against area high school Varsity Basketball AAU teams. With summer vacations, not all players were available for all games, including the playoffs...but all made significant contributions.

In the North Division finals, the winner, to whom Melrose lost a one point game, crushed their opponents by thirty, so the girls were highly competitive against North Shore AAU squads.

*All the girls will be freshmen this season except for Haley Mate', a sophomore.
