The Newton Art Association presents Artist Demo: Laurinda Phakos O’Connor, Pastels on Thursday, September 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Newton Senior Center, 345 Walnut Street, Newton. Come to see pastel artist Laurinda Phakos O'Connor demonstrate how she creates her work. Refreshments are at 7:00 p.m. and the demo begins at 7:30 p.m. FREE and open to the public. Newton Baroque presents the concert Clara Schumann at 200 on Saturday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Second Church in Newton, 60 Highland Street, West Newton. Clara Schumann was one of the great musicians of the 19th century. Come and celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth with Newton Baroque. Their performance will feature her deeply emotive Lieder sung by Nicole Estima, with Andrus Madsen playing original 19th-century pianos and Robert August playing organ with works written by her, or for her by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, and $15 for adults w/kids. More info at newtonbaroque.org.
Suzuki School of Newton presents its Ribbon Cutting & Open House on Sunday, September 15, at 4:30 p.m. at its location at 1615 Beacon St., Waban. Join Suzuki School of Newton as it celebrates its move to the newly renovated Staples-Craft-Wiswall farmstead at 1615 Beacon Street in Waban village center. The event will feature an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, live music, light refreshments, and tours of this beautiful new facility. FREE and open to the public. More info at suzukinewton.org.

Historic Newton presents a Walking Tour: Riverside Trails on Sunday, September 15, at 2:00 p.m. Meet at the Lasell Boathouse, 107 Charles Street, Auburndale. With Newton Conservators, explore sites of canoeing from the early 20th century and the proposed new Riverside Trail System by following some old pathways from the Lasell Boathouse to the former MDC Police Station on Commonwealth Avenue. The walk continues for an optional second portion to Riverside Station and across I-95 to the Leo J. Martin Golf Course. Suggested donation: $10/person. Newton Free Library presents a Poetry Reading and Open Mic on Tuesday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m. in their Druker Auditorium, 330 Homer Street, Newton. This year’s Poetry Series will kick off with readings by Linda Haviland Conte, Hilary Sallick, and Mary Buchinger of the New England Poetry Club. An open mic will follow with a limit of one poem per person. Come early to sign up for the open mic; limited slots are available, time permitting.
