New Art Center presents the class Hot Wax Encaustic for All Levels on Thursday, September 19, through Thursday, December 12, from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at their location at 61 Washington Park, Newton. Known for its durability, versatility, and unique surface qualities, encaustic (hot wax paint) has become a popular medium in contemporary painting. Beginner students will learn the uses, methods, and techniques for working with encaustics through demos and discussion. More advanced students will have the opportunity to explore the medium through independent work time and formal critique sessions. Cost is $625 and registration is required. Note: No class 10/17 or 11/28. More info at newartcenter.org.
The Scandinavian Cultural Center presents Berserk – A Viking Festival for All Ages on Saturday, September 21, from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at their location at 206 Waltham Street, West Newton. Join the Scandinavian Cultural Center for their all-new, family-friendly Viking festival! Visit the two rival Viking encampments on the SCC front lawn and watch them work on traditional Viking-era crafts, play Viking games, and perform combat demonstrations. Browse the Nordic vendors, take a traditional Finnish sauna (extra fee) and much more! Tickets are $15 ($20 day of) for adults and $7 ($10 day of) for kids (12 and under). New Philharmonia Orchestra presents its Silver Anniversary Gala on Saturday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 848 Beacon Street, Newton Centre. Join New Phil for a celebration of their 25th season, featuring must-see performances by three Newton stars—singer-songwriter Catie Curtis, 13-year-old violin phenom Keila Wakao, and Mayor Ruthanne Fuller. The evening also honors State Representative Kay Khan for championing arts and culture in the Commonwealth. After the performance, enjoy a reception with New Phil on the lawns of the historic First Baptist Church in Newton Centre. Tickets start at $25. More info and tickets at www.newphil.org.
Newton Free Library presents Build Community Through Art on Sunday, September 22, at 1:30 p.m. in their Makerspace at 330 Homer Street, Newton. Come share your work, your ideas, your process! This is an opportunity to see what your artist friends are working on and to share methods, ideas, and inspirations. Bring two or three pieces of finished or in-progress work; a small bag of art materials to share/swap; and a snack or drink to share, if you so choose. FREE and open to the public. All Newton Music School presents a Faculty Recital: Paulette Bowes, Rita Moerschel, and Joel Moerschel on Sunday, September 22, at 3:00 p.m. at their location at 321 Chestnut Street, West Newton. Paulette Bowes, clarinet, and Rita Moerschel, piano, will present their favorite repertoire along with their friend and cellist Joel Moerschel. This concert will be performed in tribute to Rita’s mother, Betty Southworth, a devoted friend of All Newton Music School and member of the Con Brio Lunch Club. For families with ages 7+.
