Newton Art Association presents the workshop Business Tips for Artists on Thursday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m. at Newton City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton. Being a visual artist is more than creating the artwork. In this lecture, learn the nuts and bolts of the business of being a visual artist. Get practical tips on pricing your artwork, creating email lists, business cards, exhibition announcements, taxes, gallery commissions, and more. Cost is $15/person. All Newton Music School presents its Rock-Away-Café on Friday, October 18, at 6:30 p.m. at their location at 321 Chestnut Street, West Newton. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a glass of wine, soda, and snacks while listening to All Newton Music School's talented faculty perform jazz, singer-songwriter, and pop music. Cappella Clausura presents Illuminations on Saturday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. at Eliot Church, 474 Centre Street, Newton. Immerse yourself in an ancient illuminated manuscript! Cappella Clausura’s women, clothed in habits, chant the hours in the medieval monastic day in 1554, Belgium. In between each "hour," explore, inspect, read, listen to scholars, eat, and drink as Cappella Clausura displays pages from the Salzinnes Antiphonal, bookmaking tools, and food and drink from that time and place. Scholar Judith Dietz, discoverer of the Salzinnes Antiphonal, will be present for a Q&A.Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, and $15 for students. More info and tickets at clausura.org.
The Scandinavian Cultural Center welcomes the Copenhagen Chamber Choir Camerata on Saturday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 848 Beacon Street, Newton. Enjoy this beautiful presentation of choral music from the Nordic region! The Copenhagen Chamber Choir Camerata well delve into the unique Scandinavian choral sound, both contemporary and traditional, exploring its rich history and roots in traditional regional music. Newton Free Library presents The Nightingale’s Sonata with Thomas Wolf on Tuesday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m. in their Druker Auditorium, 330 Homer Street, Newton. Join musician and author Thomas Wolf for a program on his book, The Nightingale’s Sonata: The Musical Odyssey of Lea Luboshutz. The multi-generational saga will be narrated with a live performance of a musical work championed by Lea Luboshutz—César Franck’s dramatic violin sonata. Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist Lucia Lin, and pianist and Newton resident Sayuri Miyamoto will perform. The program honors Henrietta Dilyock, who documented the history and culture of Newton as a volunteer at the Newton Free Library for 16 years. FREE and open to the public.
