Keep Your Kids Safe in and around Water this Summer

West Suburban YMCA to offer free swim lessons and water safety resources for local families

During National Water Safety Month this May, the West Suburban YMCA is hosting a free Safety Around Water Open House on May 19, 2019 from 12:00pm - 2:30pm. The goal of the program is to engage and educate parents about the importance of water safety skills while also providing local youth access to a free swim lesson. The event is open to all ages and abilities.

Fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years old, and many child drownings occur within the presence of other children or adults. Being knowledgeable about safety in and around water is a basic life skill that both children and adults need to be informed on.

“For many families, staying safe around water means keeping kids away from water, but it’s time to create a new wave of impact by learning basic water safety skills,” said Amanda Pierce, Director of Aquatics at the West Suburban YMCA. “Our Safety Around Water Open House is a great starting point to not only get kids comfortable in the water, but also teach their parents the importance of developing water safety skills.”
