Newton School Committee Selects Math Program Over Staff Positions: Report
The Committee approved a budget with a new mathematics program, but at the cost of some faculty positions.
NEWTON, MA — The School Committee voted to approve an operating budget that prioritizes a new mathematics program over staffing positions, according to a report from The Newton Beacon.
The Committee was presented with two budget options worth $314.5 million each by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Anna Nolin. One of which would not include the math program but preserve staff positions, while the other would do the opposite. The Committee ultimately made the decision to choose the latter option during its most recent meeting earlier this week.
The decision will reportedly affect the district’s behavioral services, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and sustainability departments. Committee member Victor Lee expressed his desire to reject both options and instead use the district’s stabilization fund to prevent the job cuts. Mayor Marc Laredo has insisted he will not use one-time funds for uses such as these. Lee alluded to the need of a potential Proposition 2 ½ tax override in the future.
