Newton Swears In Its Newest Police Chief

Cohoon was tapped for the position at the beginning of the year.

NEWTON, MA — The city’s new Chief of Police was sworn in this week.

Timothy Cohoon assumed his position in a ceremony on Wednesday that was attended by local leaders such as Mayor Marc Laredo, State Rep. Amy Sangiolo, and Rev. Joel Miller of Newton’s First Unitarian Universalist Society.

Cohoon has more than 30 years of experience in the law enforcement field, including the last three as the police chief for the city of Braintree. Cohoon resigned from his position at Braintree in January in order to come to Newton.

According to the Braintree Police Department, one of Cohoon’s greatest accomplishments during his tenure was modernizing the department’s operation with new technology. He looked after more than 125 people as the department’s leader. He also was a driving force behind creating the department’s first formal training division.

The decision to hire Cohoon was made jointly by Laredo and former mayor Ruthanne Fuller. He is the successor to George McMains, who retired at the beginning of the year after 29 years working for the Newton Police Department. He took over as chief in November 2024 when former chief John Carmichael took a leave of absence.

“We are thrilled to welcome him into this role and look forward to his leadership,” the department said in a statement. “We would like to thank the many community members, local leaders, chiefs from around the state, family, and friends who joined us… It was truly a meaningful day for the department and the community.”

Cohoon received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Western New England University, and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia.
