SALEM, MA — As Halloween crowds pour into Salem on the holiday's unofficial hometown, here are some important things to keep in mind if you are headed to the Witch City.

Visitors are strongly urged to take the commuter rail or use one of the city's free satellite lots with free shuttles to downtown. Those taking the train are advised to park in Beverly or Lynn rather than battle the traffic to the Salem MBTA parking garage — which will likely fill up anyway by early in the afternoon.

A reminder, however, that Salem Halloween ends well before midnight strikes on Nov. 1.

The final train to Boston departs Salem at 10:41 p.m., the final train to Beverly on the Newburyport line departs Salem at 10:30 and the final train to Beverly on the Rockport line departs at 11 p.m.

The street party will end after the fireworks at 10:15 p.m. Police and public works crews will begin clearing and cleaning the streets at 10:30. All lines to get into restaurants will also be cut at this time.

Visitors parking in the Salem garage should also be aware that vehicles will not be allowed in and out of the garage and surface lot between 6 and 11 p.m. — so plan your arrival and departure accordingly.

Any suspicious activity can be reported to a detail officer or by calling Salem Police at 978-744-1212. On Halloween, orange public safety tents will be located downtown. Always call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Those coming to town today and tonight are welcome to wear costumes, but weapons — real and fake — are not permitted. Public consumption of alcohol is not permitted. Those visiting are advised to arrive no later than 8:30 p.m.

Fines for public drinking, littering and random acts of trespassing and vandalism are tripled this weekend and could be up to $300.
