COME WATCH Somerville Come Alive in Sartorial Style!
Somerville, MA (April 23, 2014) In our third year, Beyond the Pattern is a runway presentation exploring the interface between art and fashion. Using live models we will be displaying a visual cornucopia of wearable art ranging from chic couture, whimsical costumes, custom jewelry and accessories to constructed metal gowns and temple dance wear - all created by local artists.
APPAREL - Lena Gorczyca, Jen Flores, JoAnne Coppolo, Rosie Weinberg and Emily Wensberg
ACCESSORIES - Katrina Jazayeri, Tom Clark and Kim Bloomfield
JEWELRY - Rebecca D'Antonio and Ilana Krepchin
WEARABLE ART - Margaret Demille and Pampi
“Rather than trying to perfect, purify, preserve – or whatever the wintry, thrifty beauty people will tell us we must do, the flesh and blood Somerville artists who threw open their doors this spring, worked with whatever they’ve got – lumps, bumps, bathmats, vintage, new,” reflects Jessica Ellen Monk of The Somerville Café Blog on the 2013 show.
This year:
* Follow the long tradition of hand-made clothing employing details from vintage and historical garments.
* Rediscover the primal strike of the animal warrior encoded in the draped temple body, pinned, tucked with origami precision
*Witness the whimsy of wearable 3 dimensional metal sculptures
*Enjoy a composite of style, color and texture in fashions designed and made by local artists.
*View the application of technique in the design and craft of an artisan jewelers' custom pieces.
*Applaud the creativity of young artists exploring the fashion world via local educational sources.
Additionally, this year Somerville High School’s fashion club takes up The Young Designers Challenge: these budding fashionistas will be modeling the pieces they have designed and made with their teachers' guidance.
