Blaze Breaks Out At Somerville Restaurant

SOMERVILLE, MA — The fire department extinguished a fire that broke out at a restaurant in a busy Somerville neighborhood earlier this week.

Firefighters responded to the scene at the Salt and Stone restaurant in Assembly at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3. According to the department, crews were able to arrive relatively quickly as they departed from the nearby Assembly Square Fire Station on 45 Middlesex Ave.

Salt and Stone is on the first floor of a six-story building, with apartment units above. Heavy smoke could be seen emanating from the roof of the building as well as inside the restaurant. According to the department, the blaze began in the flue pipe located above a gas-powered oven. The pipe extends the entire height of the building and through the roof. An aerial ladder was raised to reach the roof as hose lines were extended inside the restaurant and to the top of the building. Crews reportedly had to cut the flue pipe open to properly extinguish the flames.

While there have been no reported injuries to any restaurant employees, customers, or residents of the adjacent apartments, the department said one firefighter suffered a minor injury. Salt and Stone sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage. Smoke entered the occupied apartment units above, but there was no damage to the upper floors and no residents had to be displaced in the aftermath. The restaurant was closed on Wednesday, Feb. 4 in the aftermath of the incident.

Salt and Stone opened its doors in early 2022 by owners Sean and Sue Olson. While the original plan for the menu was to be pizza-focused, it soon transitioned to a more well-rounded American food menu.
