Davis Square Development Could Spare Popular Bars

An international student housing developer swept up three properties – including the Burren – for nearly $10 million this summer.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A new development in Davis Square will spare one popular bar and leave the door open for another. British firm Scape acquired three properties – which include the Burren Pub, McKinnon's Meat Market and When Pigs Fly Bread – for $9.755 million in July.

Scape signed a 99-year ground lease on the parcels, which are owned by Newton-based developer Myer Dana and Sons. The company operates independent dormitories in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia and recently opened a U.S. headquarters in Boston last year.

The Burren will continue to operate during and after construction, and the Sligo Pub could be given the option to return when construction is done, according to Eater. It is not yet known what will happen to other businesses in the space.
