Six Ways to Fight Fleas and Ticks

Flea and tick season is here. RiverDog can help you fight the pests!

Your pet is the most lovable creature you know. But sometimes he makes some unwanted friends. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitos are common parasites during warm seasons that will bite or “make themselves at home” on your pet. Without treatment and prevention, diseases can be transmitted to your furry friend.

Fleas - These little guys can lay up to 50 eggs a day! Fleas can cause skin problems and even transmit tapeworms.

Ticks - Though ticks are thought of as country pests, many are found in the city and can latch on to your dog after a day of outdoor play. They may transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and others.

Mosquitos - They may not latch on to your pet, but that doesn’t make mosquito bites any less irritating. Mosquitos can also carry and transmit heartworm disease.

So what can you do? Luckily at RiverDog we carry a variety of treatment and prevention products to combat fleas and ticks. Check out our six favorite ways to combat pests this season.

1) Shampoo - Regular bathing with a tick and flea killing shampoo helps treat current problems. We carry Advantage tick and flea shampoo for dogs and cats, which kills bugs on contact. We also carry U. Tick Me Off, an all natural dog shampoo. The smell drives ticks and fleas away and helps prevent future infestation. It’s also made by a local business in Maine!

2) Spray - Flea and tick spray is a fast-results option if you don’t have time for a bath. For treatment of fleas, ticks, and lice try Advantage treatment spray for dogs and cats. If ticks are your current concern, use Resultix to spray directly on any ticks. This spray works to remove ticks that have already attached to your dog or cat, preventing the tick from embedding further in the skin.

3) Monthly Repellent - This is one of the most popular ways to combat fleas and ticks. Our favorite product, K9 Advantix, is a topical formula that repels and kills fleas, ticks, and mosquitos.

4) Collar - Flea and tick collars are another great option for pest control. The Seresto flea and tick collar for dogs and cats works for up to eight months repelling and killing fleas and ticks. It can be worn at all times, is water resistant, and is size-adjustable!

5) Household Spray - For small areas of infestation, a spot and crevice spray does the trick. Advantage spray helps to control fleas and ticks, and can even help with dust mites and bed bugs!

6) Fogger - If the problem is more serious, a household fogger may be needed to combat the pests. Advantage makes a fogger that kills adult fleas and eggs that works for up to seven months after the initial treatment!

When you connect with K9 Advantix via social media, one tube of flea and tick medicaiton will be donated to K9s for Warriors. This organization pairs up veterans and shelter dogs to transform the lives of former soldiers struggling with PTSD. Just another reason we love this product!

Please remember: These products are designed to work wonders, but only when used correctly. It is very important to carefully read all instructions before using any flea and tick removal method. All the products we carry at RiverDog are safe, but be sure to monitor your pet for any signs of an allergic reaction.

So have fun in the warm weather, stay safe from pests, and Happy Spring from RiverDog!
