Somerville To Honor Teacher Of The Year Finalist

The high school is also set to receive a grant as part of the teacher and district's recognition.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The high school will host a special event on Monday, March 9 to honor social studies teacher and alumna Beatriz Thomas. Thomas has been named a finalist for the 2026 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year. Wellpoint, a health benefits company, will visit the school to recognize Thomas's contributions and award a $5,000 grant to Somerville High.

Wellpoint is sponsoring the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year program for the second year. The company provides health benefits to individuals insured through the Group Insurance Commission in Massachusetts, a service it has offered for more than 30 years.

The grant will reportedly support the school's efforts to enhance the educational experience for students. Specifically, the funds will be used to strengthen the transition process for students making the transition from eighth grade to high school.
