Somerville Voter Turnout: How It Compared To Past Elections

Tuesday's election sent many familiar faces back to office. How many Somerville residents decided the future of its government?

SOMERVILLE, MA — The municipal election Tuesday sent Mayor Joseph Curtatone to his ninth term in City Hall. All four incumbent at-large City Councilors – Mary Jo Rossetti, Bill White Jr., Stephanie Hirsch and Will Mbah — were re-elected out of a pool of eight candidates.

Outside of the mayoral and at-large races, it was a pretty quiet election. The only contested ward races were for School Committee in Wards 3 and 7. Sarah Phillips was elected in Ward 3 and Carrie Normand was re-elected in Ward 7.

According to the city's unofficial results page, 13,767 out of 54,351 registered voters in Somerville participated in the election. That represents a voter turnout of 25.32 percent. Curtatone was elected over Marianne Walles by a margin of 2,704 votes.

The 2015 municipal election saw a voter turnout of just 14.13 percent. Curtatone did not face a challenger, and Somerville had about 8,000 fewer registered voters at the time. Two years prior, Curtatone ran unopposed, and a little over 22 percent of voters participated in the election.
