Zines, Bikes, Miniatures, Masks, Rockets & more at Parts and Crafts this April

Parts and Crafts, the family hackerspace at 577 Somerville Ave. offers a full month of workshops and activities for families and children.

Learn to make things, fix things and use and borrow tools this month at Parts and Crafts and The Somerville Tool Library.

Parts and Crafts kicks off a busy month on April 4th with two exciting workshops. From 10 am to 12 pm, Terry Murray the Inventor Mentor will teach kids how to build simple launchers and learn how to make things fly in Launching Inventions. From 1 pm to 3pm local mask artist Katya Popova will teach participants how to make papier mache masks. Each workshop costs $15 for Parts and Crafts members, $20 for non-members.

Saturday April 11th is devoted to zines and comics! Self-publishing enthusiast Halley Murray will lead this free workshop that encourages kids and adults to type, draw, cut, past and photocopy their own ideas and put them out into the world.

On Thursday April 16th, from 6 - 9 pm Parts and Crafts will host its monthly Crypto Party, a free event devoted to teaching and learning about encryption, cyber security and protecting personal data. Experts and novices are welcome to collaborate, teach and learn.

Saturday April 18th is all about miniature food! Local mini artist Dina Gjertsen will lead a workshop for kids and adults introducing techniques for making realistic-looking miniature food out of polymer clay for use in dollhouses or as jewelry. This workshop costs $15 for Parts and Crafts members, $20 for the general public.

April 20th to 24th is spring school vacation week and Parts and Crafts offers a full week of vacation camp. Kids can tinker, make & learn all week in the Parts and Crafts workshop.

On Saturday April 25th the Parts and Crafts gang heads to Danehy Park in Cambridge for Rocket Day! Part of the Cambridge Science Festival, this free event will have you and your kids building and shooting off rockets made from soda bottles and cardboard.

If you or your kids love Magic:The Gathering, don’t miss the Magic: The Gathering tournament on Sunday, April 26th from 11:30 to 4:30. This classic card-trading game continues to entrance kids and adults. Entry into the tournament costs $20 and prizes are offered.

On Thursday April 30th, from 6 to 8 pm, the Somerville Tool Library, inside Parts and Crafts continues its series of monthly repair events with Bike Repair! Bring your bike, your tools, your knowledge or your questions to this collaborative repair event.
