Residents Show Worry Over Speeding on Wyman and Water Streets

Residents from Water and Wyman Streets told the selectmen they do not see a need for speed in the area.

Residents on Wyman and Water Streets are now demanding that the town address the issue of speeding on their roads.

Despite the topic not appearing as an agenda item, multiple residents spoke during citizen’s input at Tuesday’s selectmen meeting to demand action on the issue, including adding more signs and warnings for motorists to reduce their speed.

Many residents told the board that too many cars are turning onto the streets at a speed that is causing property damage and putting lives at risk.

“The amount of traffic and rate of speed of all traffic coming around the corner is treacherous,” Water Street resident Edna Fisher said. “I cannot let my grandchildren cross the street because the cars turn the corner so fast.”

Maria Orica of Wyman Street said that cars coming from Morton Street have often ended up on the other side of the road after making the turn to Wyman Street due to the rate of speed and angle of the turn.

“I can say they come around that corner either unaware they’re going to make that left or they’re speeding so fast they come to the other side of the road,” she said.

Orica joked that her bushes appear to be deco style due to the high amount of cars and snow plows that have hit them off the turn.

Water Street resident Helena Pimentel claimed that since 2012, a school sign, hydrant, her fence, a shrub, and her car were all hit and damaged, noting that her car was pushed across the driveway into a fence totaled.

Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany and DPW Superintendent John Batchelder said they would study the problems concerning speed in the area and report back to the selectmen at a later date.
