Sudbury Schools Continue to Examine Later School Start Times

A committee moves forward to discuss the possibility of moving start times later for Sudbury schools.

SUDBURY, MA — The Sudbury schools are pushing forward to study the possibility of moving start times later, particularly for Curtis Middle School. Experts have long argued that if students, and teachers, had a later start time, productivity and attention would increase.

In September ,the Sudbury Public Schools Committee (SPSC) put out a call to create a committee to study school start times.

The Sudbury School Committee School Start Time Committee has scheduled a meeting, open to the public, on Dec. 19, at 3:45 p.m. in the Superintendent’s Conference Room located at 40 Fairbank Road in Sudbury

The objectives of the committee are:
1. Examine the research from sources such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association that suggest later school start times are beneficial for adolescents
2. Review information from school districts that have already implemented, or are in the process of implementing later school start times
3. Seek input from and inform the community throughout the process.

At the Dec. 19 meeting, the committee will discuss the composition of the start time committee, finalize forum details, discuss surveys and examine proposed models.
