FREE CONCERT on Wakefield Common to Celebrate Middlesex Concert Band's 40th Anniversary
Break out the lawn chairs and blankets for a traditional summer band concert on Thursday, July 30, from 7:00 pm until dark.
The Middlesex Concert Band, a nonprofit community band based in Wakefield, has been bringing music to that community and surrounding towns for 40 years. Originally founded in the 1950s as a marching band, the group later evolved into a concert band that gave its first performance in the spring of 1975 at Memorial Hall in Melrose. To mark its 40th anniversary, the band will be presenting a free concert on Wakefield Common on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 7:00 p.m., sponsored by the Wakefield Co-operative Bank. As an extra treat, the Bank will be holding a free drawing during the concert for a pair of Red Sox tickets.
The program will feature a wide range of music – from traditional concert band selections like Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite for Military Band” and “Folk Dances” by Dmitri Shostakovich to great American jazz arrangements of W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues” and the old Glenn Miller favorite “In The Mood.” The program will also feature popular selections from Broadway and Hollywood – including highlights from last year’s smash hit “Frozen” – and, of course, will have a march or two thrown in for tradition’s sake.
The free concert on Wakefield Common, which has become a traditional end-of-the-season performance for the band, is a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy a performance from this popular group. Don’t miss this year’s concert on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the bandstand on Wakefield Common, starting at 7:00 p.m. And, make sure to stop by the Wakefield Co-operative Bank’s table to enter the free drawing for a pair of Red Sox tickets.
