PUPPETS CELEBRATE WORLD PUPPETRY DAY at BOSTON CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

Puppets – on hands, on strings, with wings – will flock to the Boston Children’s Museum to celebrate the World Day of Puppetry on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Come join the puppets and members of the Boston Area Guild of Puppetry for a day of performances, puppet-making, and demonstrations that will delight ages 3 to 103.

Join puppeteers in the “Commons” area of the Museum to make a puppet, try one out, or watch puppeteers demonstrate their skills. Judy O’Hare (You and Me Puppets), Liz Freeman (Freeman and Friends) and Leslie Macsweeney will have materials ready for you and your children to create puppets with paper and fabric. Watch Eric Bornstein (Behind the Mask Studio) transform into magical animals with the help of his beautiful mask creations; follow along with Teresa Moler’s (Blue String Marionettes) walk-about marionettes. Learn about “crankies,” illustrated stories on scrolls, with animator/author/illustrator John Lechner. All activities are included in Museum admission.

Meet friendly dragons, Chinese hand puppets and many more characters in the Guild exhibit area, curated by puppet-builder Barb Harrold (Crefftwr’s Trees).

In the Kidstage Theater, puppet companies will present lively stories for ages three and up, on the hour from 11:30 to 2:30. Join Dream Tale Puppets for a joyous adaptation of the classic “Jack and the Beanstalk, journey with Margaret Moody to a fairy garden in “Badger Meets the Fairies,” and laugh at Deborah Costine’s gentle shadow stories in “Three Pigs and Other Tales.” Performances are free with Museum admission.

The 2015 World Day of Puppetry celebration is a collaboration of the Boston Area Guild of Puppetry and the Boston Children’s Museum. The Puppetry Guild is a group of puppeteers and puppet-lovers. We meet every other month at the Puppet Showplace Theater in Brookline to share stories, techniques and our love of puppetry. For more information about the Guild, please see www.puppetsbostonguild.org.
