WALTHAM, MA – In the immediate aftermath of President Trump's immigration executive orders – particularly the travel ban and withholding of federal funds from "sanctuary cities" – many in Waltham called on the city's officials to take a firm stance in support of protecting immigrants.

A petition from advocacy group Progressive Waltham began circulating early last week calling for a joint statement by Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy and the Waltham City Council, and some advocates have posed becoming a "sanctuary city."

Last weekend, the community held a meeting to address immigration concerns with parents and families. Several prominent officials, including city councilors, the mayor and representatives of the police department, spoke in solidarity with immigrant families.
