ADULT SERVICES

Feasting From Your Local Farm
The modern movement of eating locally grown and raised seasonal fare has its roots deeply planted in our historic kitchens. Chef Liz Barbour explores our modern journey back to the local farm with a slide presentation about the benefits of buying locally and eating within the season. Following Liz's slide presentation, she will offer a cooking demonstration of two recipes featuring locally harvested, seasonal ingredients. Farm fresh ingredients never tasted so good! Register here or through the Events menu on our home page. Thursday, August 27 at 7 p.m.

Author Talk: The Butterfly Effect
Drawing on research in laboratory science, agriculture, fashion, and international cuisine, Edward D. Melillo--professor of history and environmental studies at Amherst College-- weaves a vibrant world history that illustrates the inextricable and fascinating bonds between humans and insects. Without insects, entire sectors of global industry would grind to a halt and essential features of modern life would disappear. Here is a beguiling appreciation of the ways in which these creatures have altered–and continue to shape–the very framework of our existence. Register here or through the Events menu on our home page. Thursday, September 3 at 7 p.m.

Suicide Awareness and Prevention Workshop
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. In Massachusetts, more than 600 people die by suicide each year. Would you know how to help someone in crisis? Supporting mental health awareness comes with unique challenges, especially during a global pandemic. Join us for a suicide prevention workshop presented by Samaritans, Inc. of Boston. Attendees will learn how to identify potential warning signs, and how best to support someone going through difficult circumstances. Register here or through the Events menu on our home page. Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m.

Racial Equity Study Group
Join us for a peer-directed study group examining issues of racial equity and white privilege. Modeled on the 21 Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge developed by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., we'll explore 3-4 resources or activities per week for seven weeks. We'll meet via Zoom, discuss the week's materials, and share our own lessons and experiences. Register here or through the Events menu on our home page. We may reschedule or repeat this group if enough people prefer a different time. Please let us know via cmichael@minlib.net. Thursday, September 10 at 3 p.m.

Internet Café for One
Start with the table outside our door. Add one of our Chromebooks, checked out to you for an hour. Throw in our wi-fi signal, and you’re back online, safely socially distanced. Just give us a call to arrange a time for that same day, and we’ll get you connected under the trees (weather permitting, of course).

Check Your Spam Folder
If you’ve put items on hold, but haven’t been getting your hold notices, they may be getting sucked up by your spam folder, or relegated to the Promotions tab. Once you find one, you can reserve a pickup time by clicking on the link therein.

The Best Deal in Town
From July 20 to August 20, we circulated $94,811 worth of materials (based on an item’s average retail price). Our materials expenditure was $22,847. Even without the 20-40% discount we get from vendors, that’s an incredible Return On Investment—without patrons even coming into the building. Your tax dollar goes a long way at the library.
