Wayland lacrosse has got a new leader at the helm. Team and school welcomed, officially, Marcus Craigwell last week as its head coach. But Craigwell is no stranger to the team. As head assistant coach for Wayland High School, he helped in 2013 lead the team to the number one spot in defense in the state. Now, he’s looking forward to heading the Warriors.
He was a freshman in high school when he got hooked on the sport.

“My best friend recommended the sport to me and thought I’d find great success in it,” said Craigwell. “I gave it a shot and absolutely fell in love with everything about it.”
Craigwell played his D1 collegiate career for the Hobart Statesman as a student-athlete, and was a defenseman for Hobart, where he was known for his fundamentals, leadership and dedication on the lacrosse field.

He’s “an ambassador of lacrosse who is passionate about coaching and seeing athletes excel in their understanding and performance on the lacrosse field,” according to a press release.
Craigwell was chosen to take part in the African-American Sankofa Alliance Lacrosse Team along with pros such as Kyle Harrison, Chazz Woodson Sam Bradman and Jovan Miller.
For the last seven years, he’s been coaching youth and high school players, and prides himself on being able to connect with these players, bringing out the best they have on the field. Craigwell has also been involved with clinics and camps for the Boston Cannons professional lacrosse team, and was a program manager for MetroLacrosse and Royal Lacrosse.
He also started a specialized defensive lacrosse company called D-Men Lacrosse.
So what, does Craigwell say is the key to being a good coach?
“It’s developing trust within your players,” he said. “They must trust my ability and knowledge as a coach in order to lead the team toward success. I have to trust my players are going to be fully invested in the team through dedication and exemplify complete commitment to each other.”
