Two former Westborough High School athletic standouts have been named team captains at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) for the 2011 season. Senior Danielle Coffey will serve as the captain of the volleyball team and Emily Mongeau is captain for the women’s soccer squad.
Coffey suffered an injury in the preseason in 2010, but she appeared in 18 matches last fall. She finished second on the team in blocks with 56 and she also totaled 105 kills. A middle hitter, Coffey, a member of the Northeast 10 All Rookie Team as a freshman in 2008, enters her senior season third in career blocks with 252, while her .242 career hitting percentage on 350 kills ranks fourth in program history.

Mongeau, who has played two seasons and redshirted her sophomore campaign due to injury, is a two time Northeast 10 All Conference defender. In 2010, she anchored a backline that posted nine shutouts in 18 games and allowed a 1.20 team goals-against average. A two-sport standout, Mongeau also excels for the SNHU women’s lacrosse team, for which she was named an All American last spring.
The SNHU volleyball team, under first-year head coach Peter Viteritti, opens its 2011 campaign Sept. 3 at Nyack College, with its home opener taking place three days later against Assumption College in a 7:30 contest.
The Southern New Hampshire women’s soccer team posted a 10-7-1 record last season en route to a fourth-place finish in the Northeast 10. The Penmen open their 2011 season in Philadelphia on Sept. 1 when they face Holy Family University. SNHU’s home opener is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 6, when the Penmen entertain Stonehill College in a 4:00 contest.
