Athletes of the Week Dig Deep for Breast Cancer Research

The women's varsity volleyball team hosts DIG PINK fundraiser

On October 11 the women’s varsity volleyball team will be hosting their 3rd Annual “DIG PINK” Fundraiser. The Dig Deep event will take place at 6pm with a home game against one of  the team’s biggest rivals, Aglonquin Regional High School. For the game, the girls will wear pink warm up shirts and the game will be played using a pink ball.

Dig Deep is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held all of October to raise awareness and funds. Dig Pink is The Side-Out Foundation’s trademark name for its fundraising events.

The event is a national movement in volleyball which raised over 1.4 million dollars for cancer research in 2010. Over 1600 teams across all 50 states participated in these Dig Pink Games.

Prior to the match, there will be a ceremony to honor and remember those who are fighting cancer and those who have lost their battle. Included will be a reading of names. Anyone who would like an individual honored is asked to email her name to Coach Roger Anderson at anderson@westborough.k12.ma.us and it will be included. If this person is at the game, she will receive a pink carnation.

For those attending the game, there is a suggested $2 donation at the door. During the game there will be a bake sale and candy basket raffle with 100% of the proceeds (from both admission and bake/raffle sales) going to the Side-Out Foundation which, in turn, awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to cancer patients and their families. The volleyball team is hoping that their fans, friends and families will dig deep and help them meet their fundraising goal of $1500.

The varsity girls volleyball team is excited about the DIG PINK fundraiser, offering,  “We promise a great night of volleyball. Help us make it a night of great hope by donating to the cause and wearing your pink!”

In an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer, the volleyball team requests that parents, teachers and students wear pink on October 11.
