Basketball Program Breaking 30 Year Ties with Southborough

The Recreation Department reports that the fall program will have Westborough teams staying in town.

The announced a change in its 2011-12 basketball program for boys and girls in grades 4, 5 and 6. Beginning with the fall season, Westborough will no longer compete against Southborough teams.

“We have been playing Southborough since the program began in 1980,” said Frank DeSiata, Director of the department.

The change is something that has been considered for many years, he said. The program will now run as the middle and high school programs do. The Westborough teams will compete against each other.

The 2011-12 season will include separate boys and girls divisions. Grades three and four will play together, and grades five and six will play together. DeSiata said the number of players will dictate the number of teams. Teams will continue the tradition of playing one practice and one game each week.

Registration for the program will begin after the new school year starts.
