Man Runs Boston Marathon in Each of 5 Decades

According to the official Boston Marathon website, 22 people from Westborough have registered to run in the 2011 Boston Marathon. For the days leading up to the marathon, we will feature our Westborough marathoners and encourage you to cheer each of them to the finish line!

Name: John Moynihan

Age: 67

Marathon experience: This will be John’s eleventh marathon, his sixth consecutive Boston Marathon. He said he has run the Boston Marathon in each of the past five decades.

Reason for running: John said he runs to keep old age from creeping in. At the end of the month, he plans to attend his 50^th high school reunion for Marian High School in Framingham.

Growing up in Natick, he said it was an annual family event to go into town and watch the Boston Marathon runners pass by. He recalled how he wanted to run the marathon when, as a child, he watched the athletes.

Last year, he ran with his daughter, Molly. This year, he will be starting the race with his son, Kevin.

Training tip: “You have to train,” he said. While John doesn’t have a formal training routine, he said he has been doing this long enough to know what he needs to do to run the race. “I usually run and bike year round and run shorter races in the summer.” He said that he starts to add long runs in January. “About two or three weeks ago, I did the 20 mile and still had enough to keep going. That’s a good sign,” he said.
