Northeastern to Retire Montalbano’s Number

On Saturday, May 21, Northeastern University will honor the late Greg Montalbano.

Westborough native Greg Montalbano will be honored by the Northeastern University Department of Athletics in a ceremony on Saturday, May 21, at 11:30 a.m. The event will take place at Friedman Diamond in Brookline before the final baseball game of the Huskies’ regular season. Montalbano’s number 30 will officially be retired.

“Montalbano posted one of the best pitching careers in Northeastern history, despite an ongoing battle with cancer,” the department said in a statement.

A graduate of Northeastern University, Montalbano played professional baseball for six years. From 2000 to 2006, he pitched for the Worcester Tornadoes and in the Boston Red Sox minor leagues.

During his four seasons with the Northeastern team, Montalbano went 19-7 with a 2.55 ERA and 217 strikeouts over 205 innings. In the spring of 2005, he was elected into the school’s Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

He lost his 13 year battle with cancer on August 21, 2009.

The ceremony will include members of the Montalbano family and Northeastern University Department of Athletics.
