Rangers Swimming Falls to Northampton, Wayland

Mayo places first in 500-yard freestyle, Zeng tops 100-yard butterfly.

Eight members of the Westborough coed swimming team finished in the top three of their events, but the Rangers fell to Northampton and Wayland on Monday afternoon. Westborough now stands at 9-2 on the season.

During the boys' meets, the Blue Devils topped Westborough, 93-75, while Wayland beat the Rangers, 111-65. In the girls' meets, Northampton won 119-61, while the Warriors picked up a 115-56 victory.

“I knew it was going to be a really tough meet, but it was a good experience for the kids,” said Westborough head coach Bethany Bergemann.

The boy's events were highlighted by Sam Mayo's first-place time of 5:02.07 in the 500-yard freestyle, followed by Wayland's Mark Karlson (2:26.93) and Northampton's Reeves Connolly (5:28.64). Mayo also placed second during the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.89, behind the Blue Devils' Jeffrey Lashway (1:56.81).

Will Kenyon also performed well for the Rangers, placing second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.56), and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.79).

Diana Zeng led the girls' performances for the Rangers, placing first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.33, and finishing in second place during the 200-yard IM (2:19.62).

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Westborough's Erin Burton took second place with a time of 1:13.92, while the Rangers' Katie Priest finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.89).

Westborough returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 20, when the Rangers travel to Worcester for a meet at 3:30 p.m.
