Triathlon Returns to Lake Chauncy Aug. 14

Registration is open to both experienced and novice competitors.

Those experienced and new to triathlons are welcome to register for the 2nd annual Westborough Sprint Triathlon taking place on Sunday, Aug. 14. The event includes a quarter-mile swim in , 13.9 mile bike course and a 3 mile run through the scenic trails adjacent to the lake.

Gerry Gross, co-chairman of the event, said that over 210 athletes are now registered, which is double the number from last year. He anticipates that the number will reach close to 500 by the time the competition begins.

The triathlon kicks off at the Westborough State Hospital on Lyman Street at 8 a.m. In addition to athletes, organizers are also looking for volunteers to help at the event. When competitors and spectators arrive for the triathlon, where nearly 100 volunteers greet and assist the crowd. Many of the volunteers include local scouts and Rotarians. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Gross at the Verizon Store in Bay State Commons.

The Rotary Club, with sponsorship support from UMassMemorial Health, will donate a portion of each registration fee to the American Diabetes Association. “There is a direct correlation between our event and diabetes awareness as exercise and diet are key factors in preventing and even overcoming diabetes,” Gross said.

The Rotarians are taking their devotion to diabetes awareness beyond the triathlon. “We are planning a date in September to educate students about diabetes,” said Gross. “We are planning to have doctors from UMass Medical Center and the American Diabetes Association come to the to discuss diabetes prevention and awareness with our children.”

Each leg of the triathlon has a different sponsor: the swimming leg is sponsored by the , Gray’s Cycles will be sponsoring the biking leg and the YMCA will sponsor the running leg. Additional Westborough businesses have joined in support. . is donating refreshments and will be offering balloon rides. 

Registered athletes qualify for training programs prior to the triathlon. Vescio Multisport Performance Services is offering training to help with the physical preparations, and they are offering swim clinics in Lake Chauncey to build confidence and stamina in the water.
