WESTBOROUGH, MA — The town is moving ahead again with plans for a new multigenerational community center.

The Westborough Select Board voted 5-0 earlier this month to resume the project by authorizing Town Manager Kristi Williams to execute change orders with CHA for owner’s project manager services and BH+A for architectural design services, according to a June 25 town update.

The resumed work will focus on designing and bidding the entire first floor of the community center, along with the pool, elevator and secondary stairs. The motion also requires at least two public engagement sessions and one stakeholder meeting.

The work will continue within the remaining funds previously approved by Town Meeting, according to the town. Public engagement sessions would also be scheduled in August and September.

Westborough acquired the property at 1500 Union St. in 2023 with plans to create a multigenerational center to house both the Senior Center and the Recreation Department.

Town Meeting approved funding for the acquisition and initial due diligence in fall 2023, followed by additional appropriations in October 2024 for design development and cost analysis.

The project had been delayed in December 2024, when the Select Board voted to pause work for at least six months. The delay was tied in part to temporary library operations in the building during the library renovation project.

The library is expected to leave the lower level of the community center building in September 2026, creating an opportunity for the town to determine next steps for construction sequencing, occupancy planning and project mobilization, according to the town.

The Select Board also reviewed possible funding sources, including approximately $3.5 million from the Del Webb Chauncy Lake Stabilization Fund, $1.6 million in Regal Settlement Funds, a possible future sale of the current Senior Center property and general fund debt.

No final project cost is available due to scope changes and inflation, according to the town.
