WORCESTER, MA — State officials are moving ahead with plans to reshape part of Lake Park, which includes closing an inaccessible swimming beach along Lake Quinsigamond and replacing it with a new lakefront overlook.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is set to present its 25 percent design progress for the Lake Park Site Improvements project at an upcoming public meeting. The project is driven by safety concerns tied to the existing beach, which is no longer accessible, according to DCR.

In its place, plans call for a reimagined overlook area that gives visitors a safer way to enjoy views of the lake.

Water-based recreation at the site would also shift under the proposal. Instead of traditional swimming access, DCR plans to install a spray deck designed for family-friendly play.

The project also includes broader upgrades aimed at improving accessibility across the park.

Lake Park sits between Lake Quinsigamond and Lake Avenue in the city and is Worcester's third-largest municipal park. It also houses a state-of-the-art baseball field, Tivnan Field.

Residents can weigh in during the virtual meeting on Thursday, Apr. 16, from 6 to 7 p.m. Comments will be taken live after the presentation, or residents can submit feedback via the platform’s chat feature. DCR will also accept written comments through Apr. 30.
