‘Pure Michigan’ Picture Top Pick by National Parks Service

A picture Courtney Kotewa snapped with her smartphone at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will be featured on every 2015 National Parks and Federal Recreational Pass, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has announced.

The shot almost didn’t happen, she told CBS News, which features other photos submitted in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s contest.

The lake was choppy and she almost decided to leave her phone behind when she and friends went out kayaking.

Kotewa grew up in Michigan, but it was her first trip to Lake Superior’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the Upper Peninsula.The trip was on her mom’s “bucket list,” she said.

“Nature grounds you where you can get your perspective on life back,” she said.
