Birmingham Schools Select Disaster Relief Project for MLK Day

Pontiac-based Disaster Relief at Work fills buckets with supplies and responds quickly to disasters when they occur.

BIRMINGHAM, MI – Students in the Birmingham school district will partner with a local disaster-relief organization in a district-wide service project on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 18.

Based in Pontiac, DRAW, or Disaster Relief at Work, provides relief to communities that have been hit by natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. When disasters occur, volunteers show up as quickly and efficiently as possible with buckets filled with emergency supplies and work hand in hand with survivors.

On MLK Day, students and their families will help sort and pack DRAW buckets. Until then, students will collect items to fill bathroom buckets. Each will supply toiletries for up to four disaster survivors. Items needed include towels, washcloths, nail clippers and toothbrushes.

Monetary donations will also be accepted. DRAW uses this money to pay for buckets and to supplement the organization’s warehouse stock.
