East Students Expand Horizons with Taiwanese Artists

From hand-spun candy to ancient toys, artists spend a day sharing talents at the Farmington Hills middle school.

Students at in Farmington Hills got a taste of Taiwanese culture this week, with a visit from a troupe of traveling artists visiting courtesy of the Taiwanese government.

East teacher Sui Lin Sih said the Wednesday visit was offered to the school free of charge, as part of a national tour. Artists were stationed with interpreters in classrooms, where demonstrated making dough figurines with a mixture of rice and flour, Dragon's Beard candy, hakka paper umbrellas, sugar painting, ancient toys and more.

"In Taiwan, art is a very important part of our culture," Sih said. "This is basically the Taiwanese government trying to promote our culture within different communities."

After their Detroit-area visit, the troupe was headed to Minnesota, she said.
