Former Farmington Superintendent Celebrates for Neighborhood House
Bob Maxfield of Huntington Woods marks a milestone birthday with a benefit for a local nonprofit.

Former Farmington Pubilc Schools Superintendent Bob Maxfield does all he can to avoid big birthday celebrations.
This year, for his 70th, the Huntington Woods resident is making an exception – or rather, he was told he would be making an exception – to benefit Neighborhood House, a nonprofit that provides food and other support for local families in need.
"I don't recall that it was negotiable," Maxfield said. He explained that school board member Priscilla Brouillette and school/community relations director Diane Bauman contacted his wife, Sarah, and worked out details of the Sept. 23 event at Longacre House, with him as the "absent participant."

But Maxfield is far from an unwilling participant. He has been a strong supporter of Neighborhood House since he arrived in the community in 1994.
"I was always impressed with this homegrown commitment to taking care of local people," Maxfield said, noting the passion of Neighborhood House volunteers was contagious.

Honored to share his birthday with the community, he added, "after six-plus years, it was wonderful to be remembered."
Now an assistant professor in Oakland University's School of Education and Human Services, Maxfield said he is glad to still be working in the field.
"I think that what we're all about, particularly as it relates to schools, has never been more important," he said. "I wish we could get our politicians to see education isn't the enemy ... teachers aren't the enemy."
The goal for the fundraiser is $5,000, and tickets are $25 at the door. The party starts at 7 p.m., offering hors d’oeuvres, birthday cake and a cash bar.
Donations in Maxfield's honor can also be sent to: Neighborhood House, 31544 W. 11 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills, MI 48336. All donations are tax deductible.
