Local Shops Geared Up for Prom

Popular styles include

For high school students, prom is one of the highlights of the school year. It’s also an opportunity to discover unique stores and salons in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

What to wear?

Tuxedos and formal dresses are de rigueur for prom goers. You can get both at in downtown Farmington.

Owner Munevera Surkovic knows what her clients are looking for. This includes no dress duplicates. If a dress is ordered for a prom-goer, a note is made so that dress isn’t sold to a girl attending the same prom.

Surkovic says this year girls are looking for long, fitted gowns in “bright colors like fuchsia, green, pink and yellow.”

Floral favorites

, locally owned and operated for 40 years, is gearing up to create delicate floral accessories for local proms. They offer an assortment of beaded and jeweled bracelets for wrist corsages, creating a keepsake within a keepsake.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s mom Sharlee Hoberman of West Bloomfield selected a sparkling rhinestone bracelet for the corsage of white orchids for her son’s prom date.

At in downtown Farmington, owner Michelle Hinds has a wide selection of flowers for a gentleman’s boutonniere.

 “Roses are the premiere selection for boutonnieres and corsages,” Hinds said, showing a vase of vibrant lavender roses – a popular choice this year. She advises prom-goers to not wait until the last minute for their floral needs.

“If you do need a last minute flower, we are ready!" she added.

Fancy Footwork

of downtown Farmington is a shoe shopper’s paradise, with room after room of styles and color.

Village Shoe Inn staff agrees that “rhinestones and platforms” are in demand this year. From dance-worthy shoes to sparking clutch bags, The shop offers styles to match virtually any taste or style.

Finishing touches

At , 12 Mile and Halsted in Farmington Hills, stylist Kimberly Helland said that the “vintage, 50’s and rocker” looks are in this year, as are long, soft hairstyles and dark, smoky eyes.

Helland encourages girls to bring pictures to show their stylist and make up artist. This provides a clear picture of what they like and don’t like, helping achieve the look of their dreams for prom.

Popular with prom goers

senior and the reigning Miss Farmington Jenny Fernandez is looking for accessories and perhaps a corsage in her favorite color, yellow.

senior Leah Greene bucked the “long dress” trend and opted for a knee length gown.

“A shorter dress fits me and my personality-more fun, less elegant," she said.
