Children used safety scissors to cut the ribbon that gave them access to the new equipment, including a bongo set, balance beam and playscape. Robin Rossman, an assistant teacher, was excited to see her students engaged in play.

"The real story here is about the co-op spirit," she said. "The co-op spirit is about families, parents and community friends coming together to make an idea a reality."

That spirit was present for the entire project. Moms and dads even helped dig holes by hand during the installation. Volunteers like Shannon Kawalee couldn't keep the smile off her face as she watched children enjoying the day.

Stephanie Miles, 2011 Mayfair Co-op President, said this project provides students with the chance to develop their gross motor skills and have fun doing it.

"This was a year-long project," she said. "When the old equipment was sold, it left a void in the play area and the hearts of the children.  To see their excitement over the new equipment brings overwhelming joy."

Four-year-old Lucas Dimattia put that joy into words. "This is the best equipment ever," he said.
