Here Are MN's Top 10 Safest Cities, Study Says

Overall, the state had a strong showing with its low rates in both violent crime and property crime.

A new study examines the safest cities in every state in the country. The rankings from Safewise "are intended to highlight cities with low per capita crime and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer."

In Minnesota, the analysis found that the safest community is Montevideo in Chippewa County

"Everyone wants to feel safe at home," Safewise wrote. "Whether you're checking in on your current city or scouting out a new one, we've crunched the numbers on crime rates across the country."

Overall, Minnesota fared well in the study. The violent crime rate in the North Star State is 3.18 incidents per 1,000 people, which is lower than the national average of 4.43.

While property crime has increased across Minnesota in recent years, rising from 19.9 incidents per 1,000 people in 2024 to 21.62 incidents in this year's report, it's still lower than the national property crime rate of 22.89.

The number one way Minnesotans protect their property is with security cameras at 47 percent followed by guard dogs at 36 percent and then security system at 26 percent.

According to the study, Minnesotans feel a little more safe in their state compared to last year's report, with the confidence level climbing from 44 percent to 47 percent. However, this still falls below the nationwide average of 52 percent.
