14-Month-Old Who Died In Maple Grove Pool Accident Identified

The boy who died in a pool accident at a Maple Grove home July 2 has been identified by authorities.

MAPLE GROVE, MN — A 14-month-old boy died of a drowning at a home Maple Grove and manner of death is accident, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner announced Wednesday. Gavin Reid Dennison died on the morning of July 2 after he was transported to Maple Grove Hospital.

Authorities have not said publicly how the accident occurred. One family member at the scene tried to resuscitate the boy before police began efforts, the Star Tribune reported. An officer told dispatch they were not sure how long the boy was underwater.

The Maple Grove Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and Hennepin County Medical Examiner are the investigating agencies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • From 2005-2014, there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day. An additional 332 people died each year from drowning in boating-related incidents.
  • About one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.
  • More than 50 percent of drowning victims treated in emergency departments (EDs) require hospitalization or transfer for further care (compared with a hospitalization rate of about 6 percent for all unintentional injuries). These nonfatal drowning injuries can cause severe brain damage that may result in long-term disabilities such as memory problems, learning disabilities, and permanent loss of basic functioning.
