The deal includes $281 million for Kansas City Public Schools to offset lost property tax revenue, while adding new retail, office, hotel, and housing space and upgrading surrounding infrastructure over more than 15 years.

Free preschool run by Oak Park students opens enrollment for October launch (kctv5.com) — Families in the Kansas City area can now apply for a free, part-time preschool run by Oak Park High School students, with classes starting in October. The long-running lab preschool inside Oak Park offers rare no-cost early education in the North Kansas City School District while giving teens hands-on child development experience. Missouri man charged with murder and arson after setting parents' home ablaze that killed his mother; called 911 calmly, police say (knewz.com) — Kansas City authorities have charged a 36-year-old man with second-degree murder and first-degree arson after a house fire killed his mother. Police say neighbors and an off-duty firefighter tried to rescue the victim, and investigators later linked the son to the blaze using witness accounts and Ring camera footage; he's being held in Jackson County on a cash bond.
   

4. MIDDAY CONVERSATIONS: Echoes of the City KC takes storytelling to West Africa (fox4kc.com) — Kansas City nonprofit Echoes of the City KC is expanding its storytelling work from local neighborhoods to West Africa, documenting two Kansas City men serving communities in Togo and Ghana. Co-founders Kenya Williams and Geaneen Anderson will travel Sept. 10–24 to film the new "Echoes Global" documentary and are raising $10,000 to cover travel, equipment, and outreach costs.
   

5. Missouri's A–F school grading framework heads to state board for approval (kshb.com) — Missouri is moving toward A–F letter grades for every public and charter school, with final approval expected from the State Board of Education this fall and first public grades in April 2027. Reported from Kansas City, the story highlights how local parents, Show Me KC Schools, teachers, and Liberty's superintendent view the plan's impact on school choice and classroom teaching.
