Can’t Find Your Own Business on Google? Three Checks You Can Run Today

Can’t Find Your Own Business on Google? Three Checks You Can Run Today

It usually comes up sideways. A customer mentions they had to call a friend for your number. Or you search your own business name and there’s nothing — an old Facebook page, no sign of your website.

That’s a rough moment. It’s also usually fixable.

“I’m not showing up on Google” almost never describes one problem. It describes three that look identical from the outside and have completely different fixes. Ten minutes of checking tells you which one you have, free.

Check one: does Google know your site exists?

Type this into Google, using your own domain, no space after the colon:

site:yourbusiness.com

That returns Google’s own list of the pages it has stored from your site. If pages show up, your problem is position, not existence. If nothing comes back, your site isn’t indexed — a different and faster fix.

The most common cause on a site that’s been live a while is a leftover setting. WordPress has a checkbox under Settings → Reading labeled “Discourage search engines from indexing this site.” Designers switch it on so the unfinished version stays private, and not everyone switches it back off at launch. I’ve found it live on sites up for a year.

Check two: do you come up for your own name?

Search your business name plus your town. If you don’t appear and your pages are indexed, the usual culprit is inconsistent information across old directory listings — a former address, an outdated phone number, a misspelled name.

Check three: do you come up for what you sell?

Search the way a customer would — the service plus the town, your business name nowhere in it. Excavation Libby MT.

Passing the first two and failing this one is the most common outcome. Nothing is broken — your site simply hasn’t earned a position against businesses that have been at it longer. Don’t judge this from your own phone, though — Google adjusts results based on where you are and what you’ve searched before.

If it’s the map you’re missing from, your website isn’t the issue

Search “plumber near me” and the map comes up first. Those results run on your Google Business Profile, not your website. Missing there usually means the profile was never claimed, never verified, or sits in the wrong category. It’s free to fix.

For seasonal businesses here it matters more than owners realize. Visitors passing through in July are searching on a phone with no idea what’s here.

Timelines vary. Removing a block can restore pages in days; Business Profile corrections take two to six weeks; competitive rankings take months. Those are patterns, not promises — nobody controls Google’s results, and anyone guaranteeing a position is describing their sales process.

If these checks found your problem, you probably don’t need to hire anyone. If not, the longer sequence is in this guide to why a website isn’t showing up on Google.
