Concord Man Allegedly Flips Out After DWI Arrest

Police arrest Joshua Knight on multiple charges.

A local man with a long history of arrests was charged last month with driving while intoxicated after a tipster alleged he was driving around while holding alcohol containers.

Joshua A. Knight, 35, of South State Street was arrested at 8 p.m. on Jan. 12, 2015, and charged with driving while intoxicated, transportation of alcohol/open container, and default or breach of bail conditions.

Officers were sent to the Laurel and Pierce streets area for a possible impaired driver in a red car with a caller alleging that she saw beer bottles in the operator’s hands, according to an arrest report and court affidavit.

Officers checked the area and later, made contact with a red Subaru with its motor running in the McDonald’s Restaurant on South Main Street. The operator saw the officers approaching and reportedly began to drive away. The reporting officer ordered the driver to stop and he did.

The driver, later identified as Knight, was asked for his license and registration and allegedly “appeared very spacey and lacked coordination with his hands.” He eventually handed over his license, according to the report, but reportedly wouldn’t look at the officer while speaking with him. Knight was asked to look at the officer and allegedly had very large pupils and bloodshot, glassy eyes.

“It appeared Knight could not focus and his eyes moved around rapidly,” the officer alleged.

Knight reportedly denied drinking and taking drugs. When asked if he had smoked Spice, he allegedly “became very defensive” but agreed to step out of the vehicle for field sobriety tests. After attempting some tests, the officer ended the procedure, “due to his inability to follow instructions, high level of intoxication, and odd behavior,” according to the report.

The officer requested a portable breath test and after “several tries, due to his inability to following instructions,” allegedly blew a 0.229.

Knight was arrested and during an inventory search of the vehicle, another officer allegedly found a half empty bottle of Fireball Whiskey, an open 24-ounce can of Mike’s, an unopened Natty Daddy beer, and a hypodermic needle full of a clear liquid.

Knight was allegedly uncooperative during booking, yelling and swearing at officers and calling one male officer a derogatory term used to describe part of a woman’s anatomy. He also allegedly ripped his T-shirt in half.

According to the officer, “Knight repeatedly spoke irrational statements such as, ‘Logic defies questions with strength … have you got an answer?’”

Since he was arrested in December 2014, a default charge was added. Knight was held without bail.
